Eleanor 'Ellie' Vance
1942 - 2024
Portland, Oregon
“A life of quiet grace, boundless curiosity, and a garden that never stopped blooming.”
Eleanor was a master of the quiet moments. For forty years, she taught literature at Lincoln High School, where she didn't just teach books—she taught generations of students how to read the world with empathy and nuance.
Beyond the classroom, her true sanctuary was her garden. What started as a small patch of soil behind her craftsman home grew into a sprawling, chaotic, and breathtaking haven of hydrangeas, heirloom tomatoes, and climbing roses. She believed that anything could thrive if given the right amount of attention and light.
She leaves behind two daughters, four grandchildren, and a community of former students whose lives were shaped by her gentle encouragement. She was known to say, "The best stories aren't the ones written in ink, but the ones planted in the soil." Her legacy continues to bloom in the hearts of everyone who knew her.
